MARINE FREQUENCY CONVERTORS
MARINE POWER CONVERSION SYSTEM
50 Hz, 60 Hz AND 400 Hz THREE PHASE AND SINGLE PHASE FREQUENCY CONVERTERS
Due to the growing need for energy conservation and the drive towards reducing carbon footprint. In addition to the concern that the exhaust noise disturbance, smoke, and air pollution from internal combustion engines from the shipping industry are contributing to global warming. The maritime community; including government agencies, shipping companies, cruise lines, car ferry ports, naval dockyards, harbours and marina operators, is actively seeking alternative ways of providing shore side power for the vessels when they berth at port.
There are a growing number of luxury cruise liners and fast car carrying vessels calling at international ports and naval vessels berthing at foreign locations. Many of the port and harbour operators are now offering vessels the opportunity to “plug into” the local city power supply grid on the dockside so the vessel can turn off its engines while at port. Here there is the problem, many countries have their own local power distribution grid voltages, the American continent has a frequency of 60 Hz and most of the other countries of the world have a power distribution frequency of 50 Hz.
When a vessel berths in a port the propulsion engines are turned off but would normally continue to run its diesel engine driven generators to power all of the on board auxiliaries such as air conditioning, heating, lighting, battery charging, communications centre water pumps and other utility services. The auxiliary power diesel generators produce noise; vibrations; exhaust smoke; air pollution; toxic gases; and CO2 emissions, as well as consume vast amounts of unpleasant smelling diesel fuel. They incur costly maintenance and the inevitable need for replacement parts as necessary for all internal combustion engines.
Our marine power frequency converters offer a solution to this issue. By shutting down the vessel’s engine driven auxiliary power generators and connecting to our shore to ship frequency changers there is no smell, barely any audible noise to disturb passengers or neighbouring vessel on board personnel, no vibration smoke or fumes, no CO2 emissions or costly diesel fuel or oil.
These fixed shore power frequency converters are designed for use on the public supply grid networks of 50Hz or 60 Hz with 3 phase standard input voltages of 208 V, 400 V, 460 V or 575 V. The output voltage and frequency will be according to the needs of the ship with voltages and frequencies similar to the input.
The Marine power converter can be manufactured in sizes of 100 KVA to 1,200 KVA in an indoors type of enclosure for installation in a substation or power distribution room. We can also supply the shore to ship power converters in an all-weather outdoor enclosure for installing on the dockside or mooring berth.
Our on board Marine power frequency converters are available in sizes from 25 KVA to 150 KVA with three phase 50 Hz or 60 Hz output. The power converters are manufactured for installation on board vessels of all types providing them with a possibility to connect to any shore based city grid power supply anywhere in the world.
We can also provide the shore to ship converters and the on board shore power converters with DC output and special versions with 400 Hz input for certain types of naval vessels.
The Marine power on board frequency converters provide a galvanic isolation between city grid power pick up point and the on board vessel power distribution network. The converters will regulate and condition the dockside power and will eliminate spikes, dips and other voltage surges and instability problems often encountered on feeder networks connecting simultaneously to a number of vessels.
